Exploring Affordable Housing Options for Pakistan []

Housing is a basic need of the human being for privacy, safety and protection. Housing is affordable if it is accessible within 20% to 40% of gross monthly household income. Sustainable- affordable habitat could be described as a way of developing and maintaining the living environment supporting human health (both physical and psychological), satisfying shelter needs along with protecting and preserving nature for future generations. Almost all the developing countries are facing shortage of sustainable affordable housing. Many countries have adopted various approaches to mitigate the gap between demand and supply of affordable housing and some of them have become successful like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand etc. Pakistan is among the top ten populous countries in the world with fastest growing urban population. There is a huge housing shortage of about one million houses in the country. Although various initiatives have been taken by the government to mitigate this gap, but it is increasing every year. This paper discusses the housing situation in Pakistan, highlights problems in Pakistan faced by the people and gives some suggestions to resolve the issue.

CORROSION INHIBITION OF HYBRID POLYVINYL ALCOHOL (PVA), PRO-PYLENE GLYCOL (PG) AND METHYL CELLULOSE (MC) MIXED WITH ZINC AND GRAPHITE NANO PARTICLES FOR AA6061 IN SALT SOLUTION []

The corrosion inhibition effects of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Zn nano particles, and their mixture on AA6061 substrate in 5% KCl/NaOH mixed solution were investigated using weight-loss method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curve and scan-ning electron microscopy (SEM) for its surface morphology analysis. When PVA and Zn metal powder were mixed at varying weight ratios, the optimum inhibition efficiency was significantly increased to about 86% at a ratio of 3:1. PVA interact with the aluminum atoms at the surface to form a complex. Zn binds at this site which prevents KCl/NaOH mixture from reacting with Al alloy. Hence, an organic-inorganic inhibitor combination based on PVA and Zn nano powder can enhance the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys as a green corrosion inhibitor.

A Mini-review: Effect of Aloe vera on the Growth and Health of Fish []

Fish is a source of animal protein that is relatively cheap compared to other sources of animal protein and is affordable by various levels of society. In connection with this, industrial production in the fishery sector needs to be increased in order to obtain quality fish, namely those that are healthy, free from disease, and whose growth is good and safe for consumption. Various plants can be used as supplements to increase fish resistance to disease and increase fish growth. Aloe vera is a medicinal plant that contains several secondary metabolites, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, phenols, terpenoids, anthraquinones, tannins which act as antibacterial, antioxidant, immunostimulant and can help increase fish growth and improve fish health. This article aims to explain Aloe vera and the effect of Aloe vera on the growth and health of fish. Based on the research above, Aloe vera has the potential to be used as an alternative health supplement for various kinds of fish. Keywords: Aloe vera, disease, growth, immunology.

Residual Structural Ductility of Corrosion Induced Reinforcing Steel Mechanical Properties []

ABSTRACT This study determines the role of exudates/resin against adverse attack on reinforced concrete structures exposed to severe environments due to its waterproofing nature to steel reinforcement, and resistance to surface change of coating application. The viscous exudates/resin is introduced into the concrete base after applying layers of various thicknesses directly to the steel reinforcement and assessing its usefulness as a corrosion-resistant structure exposed to the harsh and harsh environment of the territorial sea. From the flexural strength test, the maximum value was 24.42% compared to the corroded and coated sample values of -18.3% and 24.19%, respectively. The results showed a lower elongation load in the case of controlled and coated samples with a reduction value above the corrosion samples with higher elongation loads and increased values compared to the reference range (controlled) and coated samples. The calculated mean differential and percentile values were checked (0.02kN and 0.06%), corrosion values (0.01kN and 0.19%) and closed values (0.01kN and 0.2%). The results showed the effect of corrosion on the mechanical properties of reinforcing steel with a decrease in diameter as well as a decrease in the average value and the percentile recorded from the corroded samples, while the controlled and coated samples showed a preserved state by coating at one increase in diameter resulted in different thicknesses of the exudates/resin layer. The cross-sectional area of reinforcing steel gives different mean and percentile values for corroded values (0.15 mm and -5.21%) and coated values (0.016 mm and 7.12%). The results of the calculation of the maximum comparison value for both yield strength and ultimate tensile strength for the controlled sample are 7.34% and 3.48% of the corroded and coated values of -6.75% and -3.62% are coverage of 7 .35% and 3.8%. The strain ratio obtained of the maximum calculated value for the mean and percentile values for the controlled is -3.55% compared to the corroded and overlaid values of 3.45% and -3.25%, respectively. The mean differential and percentile values obtained for the control were (0.02 and 0.08%), corrosion values (0.02 and 0.09%) and closed values (0.02 and 0.08%). The mean differential and percentile values obtained for the controlled samples were (0.68% and 0.73%), corrosion values (0.68% and 1.41%), and closed values (0.68% and 0.72%). In comparison, the corroded samples showed higher stress values and higher elongation rates, whereas the damaged state of coated samples was lower load and reduced elongation. The computed data for maximum percentile values for rebar unit weights before corrosion test for controlled, corroded, and coated values are 0.5%, 0.5%, and 0.47%. The maximum recorded comparative values after corrosion test for controlled sample remained the same, with no traces of corrosion effect because it was pooled in freshwater, for the corroded and coated samples, the obtained values are -6.61% and 7.15%.The maximum percentile values of weight loss/gain for corroded and coated samples are -23.1% and 31.82%. The computed data showed a decreased value from corroded sample resulting from corrosion attack that has led to weight loss recorded whereas, coated samples has weight increase resulting from varying coating thicknesses. Index Terms: Corrosion, Corrosion inhibitors, Flexural Strength, Concrete and Steel Reinforcement

A Zimbabwean perspective on the interpreter’s role perception and implications for performance during court proceedings []

This article explores whether court interpreting in Zimbabwe’s courts of law facilitates communication between the speakers of the various languages who are subject to the courts either as the accused persons or as witnesses. The investigation revolves around the role and function of the court interpreter and the effectiveness of court interpreting as a form of language mediation. Specifically, the study investigates the contention between, on the one hand, the impression of the role of the interpreter as a translating device, reflected in Hoffman’s (1994) guidelines for court interpreters in Zimbabwe and, on the other hand, the reality of the interpreting situation. The study is based on the analysis of the primary handbook for interpreters in Zimbabwe i.e. A Guide to Interpreting in Judicial Proceedings by Hoffman (1994). Data from the analysis of the handbook were supplemented by observation of open court proceedings and structured and semi-structured interviews with court interpreters. The findings presented in this article reveal that, because court interpreters are mindful that their primary goal is to ensure that participants fully understand each other’s communicative intentions, they depart from some of the rules prescribed in their handbook by adopting a strategy in which they convey renditions which would ensure that a speaker’s communicative motive, and not only his/her actual words, is available to an end recipient. In this way, the interpreters’ renditions, as confirmed by my findings, support the expectation that court interpreters are always mindful of the need to convey the speakers’ meaning in full. Although the findings of this study are based on data from a Zimbabwean context, many of the issues raised in this study would be of interest to other interpreter-mediated courtrooms

Installation of single and three phase pole mounted meters with U.I.U. []

Nigeria as a nation of over 180 million citizens is saddled with the responsibility of providing energy of over 120,000 MW to adequately meet the increasing demand of her populace. However, due to the aging infrastructures of the transmission company and the low installed capacity of the generation stations, she is only able to generate and wheel between 3000-5000 MW. The distribution companied now pick whatever allocation is given to them and supply to the final consumers but the reality remains that most of these energy supplied by the distribution companies are lost to theft by way of infractions, and meter bypass which invariably results in a loss of revenue to the company. The need to curb these losses which are humanly induced informed the design and execution of the project.

IN VITRO ANTIOXIDATIVE ANTICHOLINESTERASE INHIBITORY POTENTIAL OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT AND ENZYME DIGESTED UNRIPE PLANTAIN (MUSA PARASIDIACA) ON ENZYMES LINKED TO TYPE-2 DIABETES []

The dried plantain pulps were crushed and milled into flour (Raw flour), while a portion of its flour was reconstituted in boiling water to form a thick paste known locally in Western Nigeria as ‘amala’. This was dried and milled into ‘Amala’ flour. The ethanol extracts and in vitro digest of raw and cooked flour were prepared (1 g/40 mL). The phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), ferric reduce antioxidant power (FRAP) and radical (DPPH, ABTS, NO and OH radical scavenging ability) were analyzed. Also, their inhibition action against lipid peroxidation, cholinesterase, α-amylase and α-glucosidase were determined. The results of the TPC were higher in in vitro digests (DPLT, 13.11 mg/g; DCKDPLT, 5.87 mg/g) compared to the ethanol extracts (PLT, 3.51 mg/g; CKDPLT, 1.61 mg/g). This result also showed that raw plantain flour had higher phenolic contents than their respective cooked flour. Similar trend was observed in the result of TFC, FRAP, DPPH, ABTS, NO and OH radical scavenging activities. The in vitro digested raw flour had higher inhibitory action against iron (ll) sulphate and sodium nitropruside-induced lipid peroxidation in rat’s brain and liver homogenates. Furthermore, the in vitro digested cooked flour had higher α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities than raw flour. These suggest their potential use in the management of type-2 diabetes and oxidative mediated diseases.

Hence, this stimulates economic trade that is associated with significant transaction costs linked to these projects. This paper examines the impact of the predictability of the project owner’s behavior, the predictability of the contractor’s behavior, project management efficiency, and uncertainties in the transaction environment on transaction costs, in oil and gas projects in Brazil. To do so, we em-ployed a survey method, by sending questionnaires to 1,500 project managers of major oil & gas companies that operate in Brazil. Data analysis using a PLS technique was applied to 235 usable responses. We discuss the implications of these findings.

DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC THINKING SKILLS: A LITERATURE REVIEW []

One of the main goals of science education is to empower individuals to think scientifically. Scientific thinking is a life skill that is helpful in developing solutions in any situation (Rother, 2017). Therefore, it is an essential skill for everyone especially now that the world is facing lots of environmental, health and socioeconomic problems (Cloude et. al, 2020). Dunbar and Klahr, 2012, described the two kinds of scientific thinking - one takes place when people think about things and processes that involve science content while the other is manifested as one performs a set of reasoning processes and methods involved in the field of science. This paper reviewed different journals, articles and studies conducted focusing on the development of scientific thinking, what it is all about, how it develops, taught, and measured among individuals, from preschoolers, to undergraduate students, interns, as well as staff members in a workplace, for the past ten years (2011-present). Based on the materials reviewed, developing scientific thinking skills among individuals is a complex process though it can be taught and developed in various ways. However, the means of measuring it is still a challenge for many educators and researchers. Moreover, teacher training for effective implementation of scientific processes and development of scientific thinking is recommended.

IMPLEMENTATION OF A CHABOT FOR CUSTOMER RETENTION WITH CUSTOMER FEEDBACK SENTIMENT FOR BUSINESS TO CUSTOMER SUPPLY CHAIN (B2CSC) USING FUZZY SEARCH CLASSIFIER AND RULE-BASED APPROACH (CASE STUDY: ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT) []

This research focuses on the Business to Customer Model for Supply Chain (B2C SC) which covers that of a retailer offering electronic goods to consumers as well as customer retention and feedback sentiment in the B2C SC domain. Solving a customer retention problem for the customer to have faster demand requests and better responses to their queries and analyzing customer feedback to promote better services and the product delivery is crucial. Sometimes, customer service representatives don't have immediate answers and they must transfer the customer to another person. That's how they serve multiple customers, and it is fair enough to take a long resolution time to resolve the customer service tickets. However, the problem identified in this research is customer retention with feedback sentiment. We studied research papers on customer retention using machine learning conversation agents and to the best of our knowledge, we couldn’t find researches that solve both customer retention with feedback sentiment using fuzzy search classifier, rule-based approach, and Vadar Library. In this research, the B2C SCM covered the fulfilment of orders and the retailer has to manage stock levels in warehouses. When an item in stock falls below a certain threshold, the retailer restocks from the relevant manufacturer’s inventory. The system business rules were created using Transact SQL Procedure and the fuzzy classifier function was written as a user-defined Function in Microsoft SQL Server 2019. C# written in Dynamic Link Library was used to call the procedure and fuzzy function methods from the Microsoft SQL Server and ASP.NET website was used to design the user interface for the users of the system.

Tourism Development in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges []

It is well documented in this literature of a nations importance in the development of tourism. Nigeria has made efforts just like other developing nations over the years to develop the tourism sector through programs and policies. Yet, the underdevelopment of the tourism sector is still alarming. In terms of its economical contribution to the nation among others, the tourism industry is not performing well. For example, the tourism sector contribution to the GDP is 34% and generates 20% employment compared to Morocco, South Africa and Kenya whose tourism sectors contributes 68%, 87% and 79% to GDP respectively. Issues and challenges could be impeding the development of the tourism sector in Nigeria. This paper, therefore, theoretically examines the issues and challenges of tourism development in Nigeria. The paper will be relevant to the development board and the national development planners.

Dismantling Patriarchy and Gender Inequalities in African Cultures: A Case Study of Macaulay's the Regent []

The patriarchal nature of traditional African society, which enables men to dominate women, has continued to negatively impact on the participation of women in formal and informal sectors of the continent. Taking an historical approach, this paper examines the conceptual and material bases of patriarchy as the roots of gender inequalities in Nigeria. The paper examines certain aspects of gender inequalities within our society from the perspective of the Yoruba world as presented in Macaulay’s "The Regent.” Through a theoretical approach of radical feminism, the play attempts to open the eyes of women to the possibility of making smart efforts to free themselves from certain bondages and oppressions imposed by patriarchy by taking advantage of certain privileges they enjoy from certain cultural practices that recognize that women could also take up, even if temporarily, some roles of men i.e. regency among others. The submissions from the findings of this study revealed that, though most African traditions do not empower women to attain enviable heights in the society, women could challenge these practices and subvert them to their own advantage. It is therefore suggested in this paper that women are as good as men and can match the men mentally and otherwise in virtually all areas of human endeavour’. For this reason, they should be equally empowered to contribute to the growth of the society. Research tools used are contextual analysis which makes it possible to explore both the religious and socio-cultural history of the people that exist in the play text.

Correlation and Path Coefficient Analysis of Agro-Morphological Traits among Bread Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Genotypes at Raya Valley of Southern Tigray, Ethiopia []

The correlations and path coefficient were studied in 36 diverse genotypes of bread wheat to understand the relationship and contribution of 12 characters towards the grain yield. Therefore, this field experiment was conducted to determine the association among traits and estimate the direct and indirect effects of traits on grain yield. The field evaluation of 32 genotypes and 4 released varieties was conducted in 6 x 6 Triple Lattice Design at Mehoni Agricultural Research Station in the 2017 cropping season. Results of analysis of variance revealed the presence of significant differences among genotypes for 12 quantitative traits. Grain yield was highly significantly and positively correlated with fertile tillers per plant and harvest index both at genotypic and phenotypic levels. The two traits had also high positive direct effects and indirect effects via days to heading and fertile tillers per plant both at genotypic and phenotypic levels. This suggested that the two traits could be used as the indirect selection of genotypes for yield. Whereas days to heading, grain filling period, and days to maturity had negative and significant correlation with grain yield both at genotypic and phenotypic levels and in-depth fertile tillers per plant and harvest index traits had also a negative direct effect on yield at the genotypic level. Keywords: Correlation; Genotypes and Path coefficient.
